The Shovelhead is an air cooled 45 degree V-twin engine manufactured by Harley-Davidson® from 1966 until 1985. These engines originally had a displacement of 1,208cc but about halfway through production of the ’78 model this was increased to 1340cc, known as the 80ci.
The shovelhead engine does not have covers as such, but rocker boxes and rocker arms which pivot on shafts. This design gives the Harley-Davidson® Shovelhead a very unique style, but also produces around 10% more power than the old Panhead engine it replaced. Early Shovelheads used the same bottom end as the Panheads and are referred to as Slabside Shovels, but from 1970 the Shovelheads used an alternator bottom end terms as a Cone Shovel.
